| | BFCU | Banks | | Members | At BFCU you are not just a customer, you are a member. This means that you are an owner of Blackhawk Federal Credit Union. | Banks can serve anyone in the general public and their customers have no ownership interest. Banks are owned by stockholders. | | Structure | BFCU is not-for-profit, meaning we exist solely to meet our members’ financial needs. After expenses are paid and reserves are set aside, credit unions return their “profits” to the members in the forms of lower loan rates, higher savings rates and free or low-cost services. | Banks are for-profit, meaning their primary purpose is to generate profits for their stockholders at the expense of their customers. | | Governace | Our policies and procedures are set and monitored by our volunteer Board of Directors. The day-to-day operations are the responsibility of the Manager and Staff. Every member in the credit union has an equal voice and vote in the management and direction of the credit union.
| Stockholders only have voting privileges. Boards of Directors are accountable to only the stockholders, not to the customers. |
*Credit unions were created to enable people to pool their financial resources to help themselves and each other. This is the “People Helping People” philosophy credit unions still use today.
